JOANNA MALINOWSKA (PL)

If I were asked to find a common denominator in the projects created over the past several years - it would be treating my artwork and process as a form of laboratory that allows me to make quixotic, nscientific and not always politically correct experiments in other disciplines and fields - for instance cultural anthropology or music. Before choosing art, I had considered becoming a cultural anthropologist, but eventually decided that what made me interested in anthropology was not so much the research that aspires to scientific objectivity, but rather the sense of relativity of a cosmic order of one's own culture in comparison to other cultural systems.

Making my art, I often adopt fictional identities, impersonate people of certain professions (a paparazzo, an anthropologist doing a field survey) or romantic heroes with impossible to be satisfied longings. Chance and accidents play an important role in my projects. A hope that I may encounter the unpredictable, or a break in the pattern, is a very important driving force behind my projects. My media range from video and performance, through sculpture and installation, to string quintets presented in the context of visual art and other musical arrangements.
